Kati’s Fit Kit – Enjoy the Journey

A few weeks ago, I wrote a post about taking action on your goals and challenging yourself to “seize the day”. For example, many of our Breakthrough Crew are currently training to compete in the Tactical Strength Challenge in October – and are looking really strong in their training I might add!

As I talked about before, setting specific goals can create a focus for your training, which makes you more disciplined and gets you better results. But sometimes, that goal we are focused on starts to carry so much weight that we forget to enjoy the journey of getting there.

As a goal driven person myself, this is definitely something I have to constantly remind myself to work on. Goals help keep us focused, but sometimes we get too wrapped up in the outcome we are striving towards, that we forget to enjoy the things we are doing to get there. Or maybe the goal we want to achieve even scares us a little bit, and we find ourselves approaching our work towards this goal with apprehension. Sometimes we worry about what will happen if we don’t reach the goal we have set.

In yogic philosophy there is a concept called “aparigraha” that I find helpful in situations like this. Aparigraha means non-attachment. There are a lot of different ways for us to find ourselves overly attached or possessive. Here are a few examples:

*Attachment to material possessions – always chasing after more “things” to make us happy *Attachment to people – of course good relationships should be nurtured, but sometimes we find ourselves entangled in unhealthy relationships and can’t seem to let them go *Attachment to the past – whether good or bad, if we find ourselves trying too hard to relive or avoid past experiences, we miss out on the present moment *Fixation on the future – spending too much focus on how we want the future to be also distracts us from the present.

So, it might seem that goal setting and non-attachment might be mutually exclusive, but I don’t believe this to be the case. When we allow ourselves to focus simply on the action we are taking towards our goals, rather than what the results of those actions will be, then we find ourselves living in the present. We can be confident that we are working towards what we desire, while letting go of worrying about exactly how everything will play out. Don’t concern yourself with the outcome of a situation, just focus on what you are doing right now in the present to work towards the outcome you want.

In short – enjoy the journey, my friends!

Strength and Love – Kati

“Let your concern be with the action alone, and never with the fruits of action. Do not let the results of your action be your motive, and do not be attached to inaction.” Krishna – The Bhagavad Gita
