THE BREAKTHROUGH ADVENTURE TEAM

‘’As soon as I saw you, I knew an adventure was about to happen.’’ – Winnie the Pooh

IT'S TIME FOR ANOTHER ADVENTURE WITH THE BREAKTHROUGH ADVENTURE TEAM! Our training philosophy is driven by a desire to be able to live and experience life to the fullest extent.  We train our bodies, our minds, our spirits, not just to be able to keep ourselves healthy and strong for the day to day grind, but also for the chance to seek out new adventures and feel well prepared for what they might entail.  Adventures can be found in many ways, of course, and we try to keep our physical preparedness general enough to pull off just about any caper that calls us to action.   As far as the Breakthrough Adventure Team is concerned, we’re focusing on the type of experience we find outdoors, in the wilder places of the world.

In the late 1800s, John Muir, the famous naturalist, documented his incredible journeys through the mountain ranges of Southern California in many inspiring letters to his friends. When these mountain adventure narratives were published, they prompted thousands of travelers to seek out similar experiences and to witness for themselves the rugged beauty of the San Gabriel and San Bernardino ranges.  Our inaugural hike last year took us to Switzer Falls and the first camp built specifically for the “tourist hiker” in the mountains of Southern California in 1884, by Commodore Perry Switzer, of Pasadena.

This year we will explore a similar area with just as much beauty and history through Millard Canyon, Mt. Lowe and the Dawn Mine.

"Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees."  - John Muir

Enjoy the tranquility of the forest, the fun of multiple stream crossings, and exciting terrain as you experience the unique history of this area.

We will have hiking options ranging from 2.5 miles to Millard Falls, or just over 4 miles to the Dawn Mine depending on the challenge level you are looking for.

The Team will be limited to 20 people and last year we sold out within a week!

The Breakthrough Adventure Team is open to gym members only. Training begins the week of 11/7. Our Adventure Hike will be Sunday 12/11.

Registration Deadline is Monday 10/31.

Just as we follow specific training protocols to prepare for other athletic events like the Tactical Strength Challenge or a Powerlifting meet, we will have the latest in cutting edge programming that uses StrongFirst’s proven Anti-Glycolytic principles to make this hike feel like a fun test of our skills!  These training sessions are born from field testing among our colleagues in Germany who train alpinists for some of the most adventurous climbs you can imagine.  You can count on feeling ready to take on this local hike and hopefully feel amply prepared and inspired to seek out even more challenging adventures as well!

HERE'S WHAT YOU GET WHEN YOU JOIN:

  • Specialized Hike Prep Strength & Endurance Programming - A customized three day per week program to maximize your skills for the adventure ahead.

  • A Weekly Team Practice Session - As we’ve seen time and again, we are creatures who crave community, and preparing for adventures as a team is much more fun!  This special weekly practice will help to ensure that everyone is prepared according to their individual fitness level and skill. Team practice options are Wednesdays at 6pm and Saturdays at 9am.

  • A Bonus Prep Hike - This field test of our training will occur at the halfway point in the program and will be a fun bonus outing for any team members who are available to join in. This shorter hike will take place locally near the gym on Sunday 11/27.

  • Team T-Shirt - An exclusive design just for the Adventure Team.

The Scandinavians call it “Friluftsliv” meaning “open-air living;” a term used to describe the value of spending time in remote locations for spiritual and physical wellbeing.  The Japanese use the term "Shinrin-yoku," meaning to take in the forest atmosphere or forest bathing.  Many cultures around the world recognize that exercise and spending time outdoors can reduce symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression.  Here in America, one of the most stressed countries in the world, with 55% of Americans reporting feelings of stress daily, we’re in desperate need of our own version of this concept.  Our answer is the Breakthrough Adventure Team!

The investment to join the Adventure Team is $97. You will need to have a chest-strap heart-rate monitor to participate. We can recommend an inexpensive one if you don't have one.
