Mountain Landscape

‘’As soon as I saw you, I knew an adventure was about to happen.’’ – Winnie the Pooh

ANNOUNCING THE INAUGURAL BREAKTHROUGH ADVENTURE TEAM! Our training philosophy is driven by a desire to be able to live and experience life to the fullest extent.  We train our bodies, our minds, our spirits, not just to be able to keep ourselves healthy and strong for the day to day grind, but also for the chance to seek out new adventures and feel well prepared for what they might entail.  Adventures can be found in many ways, of course, and we try to keep our physical preparedness general enough to pull off just about any caper that calls us to action.   As far as the new Breakthrough Adventure Team is concerned, we’re focusing on the type of experience we find outdoors, in the wilder places of the world.

In the late 1800s, John Muir, the famous naturalist, documented his incredible journeys through the mountain ranges of Southern California in many inspiring letters to his friends. When  these mountain adventure narratives were published, they prompted thousands of travelers to seek out similar experiences and to witness for themselves the rugged beauty of the San Gabriel and San Bernardino ranges.  The first camp built specifically for the “tourist hiker” in the mountains of Southern California was opened in 1884, by Commodore Perry Switzer, of Pasadena.

As such, our inaugural adventure will prepare us for one of the famous local "walks in the woods" dating back to this golden era of adventuring; a hike to Switzer Falls!

"Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees."  - John Muir

"The Switzer Falls hike is so much more than just a waterfall. In about 2 miles the trail to Switzer Falls takes you along a babbling brook, through historic ruins, on the side of a spectacular gorge, and then finally, to a pristine waterfall. Although I’ve listed the Switzer Falls hike as moderate because there’s a bit of climbing, overall it’s a very doable hike that offers many rewards for a small effort.”

- The Hiking Guy, aka Cris Hazzard

The Breakthrough Adventure Team is open to gym members only. Training begins the week of 11/15. Our hike to Switzer Falls will be Sunday 12/12.

Registration Deadline is Wednesday 11/10.

This journey will take between 2-3 hours, covering a modest ascent of 690 feet to reach and elevation of 3,250 feet.  Not too difficult at all for a first Adventure Team outing, especially because we will be well prepared!   Just as we follow specific training protocols to prepare for other athletic events like the Tactical Strength Challenge or a Powerlifting meet, we will have the latest in cutting edge programming that uses StrongFirst’s proven Anti-Glycolytic principles to make this hike feel like a fun test of our skills!  These training sessions are born from field testing among our colleagues in Germany who train alpinists for some of the most adventurous climbs you can imagine.  You can count on feeling ready to take on this local hike and hopefully feel amply prepared and inspired to seek out even more challenging adventures as well!

  • Specialized 1 Month Hike Prep Strength & Endurance Programming - A customized three day per week program to maximize your skills for the adventure ahead.

  • A Special Weekly Team Practice Session - As we’ve seen time and again, we are creatures who crave community, and preparing for adventures as a team is much more fun!  This special weekly practice will help to ensure that everyone is prepared according to their individual fitness level and skill. Team practice options are Thursdays at 6pm and Saturdays at 9am.

  • A CooSpo H6 Heart-rate Monitor - This chest strap monitor uses ANT+ technology and Bluetooth, which allows it to sync and work wirelessly with the devices you probably already have.  The strap is soft, comfortable, waterproof and the battery life is impressive with 300 hours of use.  Since our specialized programming will be driven by data from our heart-rate monitors, this is an essential piece of equipment for our team practice sessions and programming.

  • A Holiday Prep Hike - This field test of our training will occur at the halfway point in the program and will be a fun bonus outing for any team members who are available to join in. This short hike will take place locally near the gym on Thanksgiving morning, timed perfectly before your big feast!

The Scandinavians call it “Friluftsliv” meaning “open-air living;” a term used to describe the value of spending time in remote locations for spiritual and physical wellbeing.  The Japanese use the term "Shinrin-yoku," meaning to take in the forest atmosphere or forest bathing.  Many cultures around the world recognize that exercise and spending time outdoors can reduce symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression.  Here in America, one of the most stressed countries in the world, with 55% of Americans reporting feelings of stress daily, we’re in desperate need of our own version of this concept.  So we’re going to call it “Adventure Training” and we want to share it with as many of our dear members as we can.  Don’t miss out on this opportunity to join us for something new and exciting and be part of our first-ever Breakthrough Adventure Team!

The investment to join the Adventure Team is $97.  Sign Up to reserve your spot!
