THE BREAKTHROUGH ADVENTURE TEAM

‘’As soon as I saw you, I knew an adventure was about to happen.’’ – Winnie the Pooh

IT'S TIME FOR ANOTHER ADVENTURE WITH THE BREAKTHROUGH ADVENTURE TEAM! Our training philosophy is driven by a desire to be able to live and experience life to the fullest extent.  We train our bodies, our minds, our spirits, not just to be able to keep ourselves healthy and strong for the day to day grind, but also for the chance to seek out new adventures and feel well prepared for what they might entail.  Adventures can be found in many ways, of course, and we try to keep our physical preparedness general enough to pull off just about any caper that calls us to action.   As far as the Breakthrough Adventure Team is concerned, we’re focusing on the type of experience we find outdoors, in the wilder places of the world.

Our big hike this year will be to Echo Mountain in Altadena - included by USA Today as one of the "10 Great North American Hikes". The hike begins at the historic Cobb Estate, and ascends toward Echo Mountain paralleling some of the old Mount Lowe Railroad route. With beautiful views along the way, this hike gains elevation of around 1400 feet. Once at the top you'll see the ruins of the grand Echo Mountain Resort - a 70 room Victorian Resort built to rival the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego!

We will have a second hike selected soon for anyone who may want a shorter adventure with less climb.

"Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees."  - John Muir

With a unique history, beautiful views and a fun ascent, the hike to Echo Mountain has so much to offer. This out and back hike is around 5.5 miles, and the elevation gain is spread out over 2.75 miles of switchbacks with views so it's quite doable. Our training will have us ready to handle it with ease!

For our more gentle hike, we are planning on a 2-3 mile adventure with minimal climb.

The Breakthrough Adventure Team is open to gym members only. Training begins the week of 5/13. Our Echo Mountain Hike will be Saturday 6/8, and the shorter hike will be Sunday 6/9.

Registration Deadline is Thursday 5/9.

Just as we follow specific training protocols to prepare for other athletic events like the Tactical Strength Challenge or a Powerlifting meet, we will have the latest in cutting edge programming that uses StrongFirst’s proven Anti-Glycolytic principles to make this hike feel like a fun test of our skills!  These training sessions are born from field testing among our colleagues in Germany who train alpinists for some of the most adventurous climbs you can imagine.  You can count on feeling ready to take on this local hike and hopefully feel amply prepared and inspired to seek out even more challenging adventures as well!

HERE'S WHAT YOU GET WHEN YOU JOIN:

The Scandinavians call it “Friluftsliv” meaning “open-air living;” a term used to describe the value of spending time in remote locations for spiritual and physical wellbeing.  The Japanese use the term "Shinrin-yoku," meaning to take in the forest atmosphere or forest bathing.  Many cultures around the world recognize that exercise and spending time outdoors can reduce symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression.  Here in America, one of the most stressed countries in the world, with 55% of Americans reporting feelings of stress daily, we’re in desperate need of our own version of this concept.  Our answer is the Breakthrough Adventure Team!

The investment to join the Adventure Team is $107. You will need to have a chest-strap heart-rate monitor to participate. We can recommend an inexpensive one if you don't have one.
